Is Brave a safe browser?

Brave is guaranteed to be safer than your current browser. Brave automatically blocks:
  • Any and all trackers
  • Cookies
  • Pop-ups
  • Ads
  • Demographic targets
  • Location settings
  • All the nasty stuff that gets stuck on you as you browse the Internet.

You can also toggle Brave's powerful firewall at any time, leaving the rest of the defences up to you. Brave's shield customisation and firewall settings allow extensive fine-tuning of what gets through. This same protection applies to Brave's script blocking, fingerprinting protection, payments, addresses, passwords, trackers, and everything else.

To further boost your safety, Brave can automatically upgrade your connection to HTTPS, giving you the highest level of security everywhere. Read more

What is DuckDuckGo?

DuckDuckGo + Brave Browser

DuckDuckGo is "the search engine that doesn't track you" and has been gaining traction since 2008. DuckDuckGo never mines personal data or even keeps track of a user's browsing habits.

Search engines like Google profit by mining your personal data from across the web. It's the reason you see targeted ads or banners when you're browsing the Internet.

Each time you enter a search with DuckDuckGo the search engine treats you as though it's your first time there. "We simply don't store anything that can tie your searches to you personally or even tie them together into a search history [...]"

DuckDuckGo is Brave's default search engine for incognito mode, and works on iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux. Use Brave and DuckDuckGo together to search without Google hovering over your shoulder. Read more

How to use Tor with Brave

Private window in Brave

Tor has been fully integrated into the Brave browser via 'Private Tabs with Tor'.

To open a New Private Tab with Tor, you must:

  1. Open the Customise and Control tab in your Brave browser (the three horizontal stripes in the upper right corner of the browser)
  2. Click 'New Private Tab with Tor' and wait for the new window to open. You can also simply hit Alt+Shift+N to do the same thing.
  3. Clicking this will open a new window using the Tor browser. You will notice the colour scheme changes from light to dark.

Using Tor (The Onion Router) and Brave together makes it more difficult to track which websites you visit. Websites will also have a much harder time identifying or tracking user IP addresses arriving via Brave's 'Private Tabs with Tor'.
